Yoga Teacher Column (1): Why Do So Many Yoga Teachers End Up Burned Out?

瑜伽老師專欄(1) 為何很多瑜伽老師,最後都把自己累壞了?

As a Yoga Teacher, Have You Let Yourself Become Overly Depleted?

Exhausted Yoga Teacher and Energetic Burden in the Space
At times, I notice that
many people who enter a yoga classroom
never actually came to learn yoga.
Some come because their marriage is in crisis.
Some come because work stress is suffocating.
Some come due to anxiety and chronic insomnia.
Some come simply because they do not understand why they are unhappy.

And the yoga teacher
is often one of the rare souls in their life
who is genuinely willing to pause and listen.
Gradually, students begin sharing their life stories.
Sharing marital wounds,
family friction,
deep trauma,
and hidden grievances.
Sharing feelings they had nowhere else to voice.
Moved by understanding,
tenderness,
and pure love,
the teacher begins to hold space and accompany them.

• • •

In the beginning,
this is an exquisite grace.
Because someone is finally understood.
Someone finally feels safe enough to weep.
Someone is finally willing to face their inner self.
The teacher also feels profound joy,
believing their existence holds true meaning,
that their presence has genuinely helped another.
Yet slowly, over time,
many teachers begin to grow increasingly exhausted.

• • •

A student messages at midnight, and the teacher replies.
A student breaks down, and the teacher stays to comfort.
A student's marriage fractures, and the teacher consoles.
A student clashes with parents, and the teacher listens.
A student encounters setbacks at work, and the teacher supports.
A student loses their way in life, and the teacher continues accompanying.

Until in the end,
the teacher's life is crammed full of other people's lives,
while completely neglecting their own.

Exhausted Yoga Teacher and Energetic Burden
• • •

Many assume that
a yoga teacher's fatigue
comes from teaching too many classes.
That is rarely the true cause.
What truly depletes a teacher
is the invisible burdens they carry.

Within the Lapis Light System, there is an essential observation:
Highly sensitive souls easily mistake deep understanding for personal responsibility.
Because you see so clearly, you cannot bear to turn away.
Because you understand so intimately, you find it hard to let go.
Because you feel their pain, you begin carrying it.
Yet understanding never equals being responsible for their life.

• • •

Many yoga teachers burn out
not from lack of capability,
but from carrying an excess of love.
Yearning so intensely to help others,
longing so deeply for students to thrive,
wishing desperately to spare them suffering,
until unconsciously,
they shoulder the weight of their students' destiny.

• • •

Yet what Lapis Light wishes to remind you is:
True human growth
never occurs when carried by another.
It only awakens through personal sovereign choice.
You can accompany.
You can understand.
You can offer orientation.
But you cannot walk the path on their behalf.

• • •

For that path,
in the final reckoning, belongs to them alone.
That lesson belongs to them.
And that life decision
must also be their own.

• • •

There is another profound reason
why so many teachers feel depleted:
Taking the student's transformation as their own responsibility.
When students advance, the teacher feels elated.
When students regress, the teacher falls into anxiety.
When students depart, the teacher feels wounded.
When students repeat old patterns, the teacher feels helpless.
As though the trajectory of a student's life
dictates the teacher's own self-worth.

• • •

Yet if we are truly honest,
we discover:
what truly pains us
is not that the student has not changed,
but our own inability to accept that:
Life moves to its own sovereign rhythm.

• • •

Some souls
must fall repeatedly to learn.
Some
must wander circuitous roads for years.
Some,
even when knowing the clear answer,
require decades of living
before gathering the courage to embody it.

• • •

And the teacher's greatest spiritual cultivation
is often not teaching,
but profound trust.
Trusting life.
Trusting timing.
Trusting that each individual possesses their own sacred journey.

Fatigued Yoga Teacher and Somatic Holding
• • •

Lapis Light has always held that
truly mature companionship
is not constantly reaching out to drag someone along.
Rather, when they fall,
you continue holding unshakable faith that:
They possess the inherent strength to stand up on their own.

• • •

So if you are a yoga teacher
who has felt depleted lately,
feeling powerless,
feeling as though you have nothing left to give to anyone,
it is not that your heart has turned cold.
It is life gently reminding you:
You have placed yourself last once again.
Return to yourself first.
Nurture yourself first.
Sense your own physical body first.
Return to your own breath first.
Because only when you remain anchored within yourself
will your holding space
never turn into self-depletion.

• • •

A truly grounded teacher
is not the one who tends to everyone else best,
but rather:
The one who, while caring for others,
never abandons their own center.

Lapis Light Closing Reflections

Sometimes,
what you need is not more classes to teach,
not a greater headcount of students,
not another certification.
It is simply returning home to yourself.
And gently asking your heart:
"How long has it been since I truly took loving care of myself?"
