The hardest practices are often the simplest movements
“Poses that seemed easy in other yoga classes feel so demanding at Tanya. Why is that?”
Recently, several students who have practiced yoga for years shared their surprise with our team after class. Although Tanya’s Lapis Light Yoga system had not asked them to attempt extreme poses, they woke the next morning with an unfamiliar, gentle soreness deep in their bodies.
The difference between making a shape and truly engaging the body
This is the difference between making a shape and truly engaging the body.
In our fast-paced daily lives, our clever brains keep looking for the quickest, least demanding way to reach a goal. In the body, this can become a habit of using effort in the wrong places: compensating with the calves when walking or with the neck when raising an arm.
When you bring these habitual compensations into yoga, the body remains out of balance, however impressive the movement looks.
In Lapis Light Yoga, we seek what is real
In Lapis Light Yoga, our aim is not to unlock particular poses. We seek what is real.
Truly slowing down;
Truly feeling the space along the backs of the thighs, instead of forcing a bend through the lower back;
Truly aligning the pelvis, even if that means your hands no longer reach the floor.
When you set aside the illusion created by gravity, momentum and compensation, and use your core and deep muscles to stabilize even the simplest movement, that intense feeling of muscular effort can help you discover your body anew.
Here, we do not practice tricks. We practice helping each joint and muscle return to where it belongs.”
