When Your Compassion Begins to Fade
Are you becoming cold?
a student sits before you weeping,
sharing narratives you have heard countless times.
Relationship dilemmas,
family fractures,
career friction,
crises of self-worth.
If it were you in the past,
you would be filled with patience,
deeply willing to understand,
deeply willing to accompany,
deeply willing to hold.
Yet now,
you discover an unexpected thought rising inside:
"Why this again?"
And you are startled by yourself.
You always believed you were a loving soul.
A presence willing to walk alongside others,
someone who understands human frailty.
Yet now,
you begin to run out of patience,
reluctant to comfort anyone,
unwilling to absorb another person emotional weight.
Sometimes,
when a message notification pops up,
your immediate internal reaction is not care,
but sheer exhaustion.
And self-blame sets in.
Have I become indifferent?
Is my cultivation insufficient?
Has my love dried up?
It Is Not That Your Love Has Vanished, but That Your Energy Has Reached the Bottom
Often, your love has not vanished.
Your energetic reservoir has simply run dry.
Because true compassion
was never meant to be an infinite supply.
When a person spends prolonged time:
understanding others,
holding space for others,
tending to others,
responding to others,
while rarely having someone understand them,
hold space for them,
tend to them,
or respond to them,
the physical organism inevitably sends a clear signal:
"I am tired."
Yet many guides and teachers
misinterpret this visceral cry as:
a lack of love.
The truth is precisely the opposite.
Those who genuinely love
are far more prone to burnout.
Because they truly feel,
truly empathize,
and truly desire to assist.
And if that love lacks sovereign boundaries,
it eventually turns into sheer depletion.
The Rhythm of Love: Giving Without Receiving Is Depletion
Love is not constant output;
love is reciprocal flow.
Inhalation,
exhalation.
Daylight,
nightfall.
Tides rising,
tides ebbing.
If there is only giving
and no replenishing reception,
that is not flow;
that is depletion.
So when a day comes
where you no longer wish to comfort anyone,
do not criticize yourself.
Perhaps life is reminding you:
this time, it is your turn to be nurtured.
What you need may not be another healing modality,
nor another certification,
nor another workshop.
Rather:
to sleep,
to soak in sunshine,
to daydream,
to gaze at the sea,
to savor a delicious meal.
Or even do nothing at all.
Because sometimes,
true spiritual practice is not continuous giving,
but granting yourself permission to pause.
Lapis Light Concluding Words
Many teachers fear becoming cold.
Yet what is genuinely hazardous
was never indifference.
It is:
being entirely depleted,
yet continuing to burn yourself to ashes.
So if recently
you do not wish to comfort anyone,
do not rush to judge yourself.
Return first to the body,
return first to the breath,
return first to ordinary life.
Because mature compassion
does not mean eternally taking care of others.
It is knowing:
when to draw love back, and care for yourself.
Every student arrival and condition is a mirror reflecting the facilitator inner state.
The Lapis Light system curates two deep reflections to accompany you in drawing back energy and standing upon your solid ground:
