When Students Leave, I Realized I Too Am Practicing
cut deeper than expected.
Especially when that person,
is a student you accompanied for many years.
You watched her entire journey.
From not daring to speak,
to willingly expressing herself.
From constantly repressing emotion,
to recognizing her own feelings.
From being estranged from her body,
to rebuilding her bond with herself.
You saw her weep,
laugh,
stumble,
and rise again.
You even took part in some of her major life passages.
Gradually, you assumed this bond,
would continue walking on.
At least,
that it would not conclude abruptly.
Yet one day,
she left.
Perhaps without an argument,
without conflict,
perhaps merely a quiet:
"Teacher, thank you."
Or even without a single word,
she was simply gone.
What hurts most,
is seldom the parting itself.
It is that:
the connection you thought was so profound,
suddenly turned completely silent.
You begin to ruminate:
Did I make a mistake?
Was I not good enough?
Did I fail to guide her properly?
Could I have given more?
Then you finally awaken:
that pain,
did not stem purely from the student's departure.
It came from this:
you had placed your own sense of self worth,
inside that relationship.
The Lapis Light System holds a vital reminder:
every bond we find difficult to release,
ultimately guides us to see ourselves.
Many yoga teachers think,
they are holding space for students.
Yet at times,
students are also holding space for the teacher.
Accompanying the teacher to feel:
needed,
trusted,
relied upon,
validated.
These feelings,
are not wrong in themselves.
Every human longs to be loved,
longing for their existence to carry meaning.
Yet when your worth,
becomes hinged on whether students stay,
their departure,
feels like a total invalidation.
Life's greatest tenderness lies here:
it consistently uses loss,
to call us back to ourselves.
Returning to realize:
reluctance to let go was not born of love,
but of fear of loss.
That sorrow was not caused by the student leaving,
but because that part within craving to be needed,
tasted loneliness once more.
The deepest practice for a teacher,
was never about compelling students to stay.
It is about standing unshaken in your own worth,
even as they depart.
Mature presence,
never tethers someone to your side.
It blesses them to walk into their own life.
Some students are destined to walk with you for three months.
Some for three years.
Some for ten years.
Regardless of duration,
as long as during that chapter,
she grew closer to herself because of your presence,
that journey was already complete in its meaning.
Lapis Light believes:
a true teacher is not someone with legions of followers.
It is someone who, even after students depart,
knows those ignited souls will carry their own light forward.
You will finally see:
a student leaving is not a loss.
It is life whispering:
she has reached her next horizon,
and it is time for you to continue walking forward too.
Lapis Light Reflection
One day,
you will feel gratitude for those who departed.
Not because they left gracefully,
but because they showed you:
genuine, grounded love does not shift whether someone arrives or leaves.
A mature teacher does not cling tightly to students.
Watching them walk into the distance,
she can smile with sincere blessings,
and return peacefully to her own life.
