Parenting Through Adolescence: Mindful Presence Over Control

面對叛逆期的孩子,身為父母的我們可以怎麼做?

Facing an Adolescent Child: Beyond Worry, Anxiety, Conflict, and Disappointment, What Else Can Parents Do?

Finding inner peace facing adolescent rebellion
Many parents are not truly afraid of a child being disobedient.
What they genuinely fear is this:
the child who once loved being close,
suddenly starts closing doors, falling silent, talking back, and growing distant.
You begin to feel you no longer understand them.
Where they once shared everything,
now a dismissive "You just do not understand" ends the conversation.
Where they once held your hand,
now asking a single extra question,
feels like an unwelcome intrusion.
So parental anxiety flares up.
Worrying they fell in with the wrong crowd.
Worrying they will stray from the path.
Worrying they will neglect their studies.
Worrying they will be hurt.
And worrying, most deeply,
whether they are slowly losing their child forever.
Yet so many conflicts,
do not stem from disliking each other.
They arise because of intense love.
Parents are terrified of seeing their child fall.
The child is desperate to prove they are grown up.
Thus, one desperately controls,
while the other desperately escapes.
In the end, both are wounded.

When children enter adolescence, the deepest heartbreak for many parents is: "I do everything for your own good, why cannot you see that?"

Yet for the child, they are navigating a momentous developmental passage: they are questioning: "If I do not fulfill my parents' expectations, am I still truly myself?"

So much of adolescent defiance is not a child turning bad. It is a soul trying to become "themselves."

They will resist.
They will push against you.
They will test every boundary.
They might even deliberately say words that pierce a parent's heart.

Because they are clumsily practicing: how to step away from dependence and build their own world.

Yet many teenagers do not know how to express this, and many parents do not know how to release control. Love turns into a painful tug of war.

"The child thinks: 'You never believe in me at all.'
The parents lament: 'I love you so much, how did you turn into this?'"

Yet in reality, what adolescence needs most is never tighter control. It is knowing, while healthy boundaries remain in place: "Even when you are confused, emotional, and immature right now, I am still here, willing to understand what you are going through."

This does not mean permissiveness, nor does it mean abandoning standards. It means parents gently learn: to look upon the child with presence before rushing to fix them.

Most often, what a teenager longs to be understood is not: "I can do whatever I please."
It is: "When I am confused, furious, and difficult to love, will you still stand beside me?"

Some parents fixate entirely on outward behaviors during teenage rebellion. Yet inside the child, a vast reservoir of unspoken feelings has long been accumulating:

  • Pressure
  • Comparison
  • Loneliness
  • Being misunderstood
  • Self doubt
  • And emotions they do not yet know how to process

They do not yet know how to organize these waves, so they can only erupt through tantrums and resistance.

Lapis Light tenderly whispers to parents: do not rush frantically to drag your child back. What a child needs most is often not to be corrected, but to be accompanied.

Walking beside them through the messiness.
Watching them slowly cultivate their own authentic strength.
Letting them know: even while currently unpolished, they remain utterly worthy of love.

And parents must also give themselves grace: you cannot be a flawless parent. You will feel exhausted, disappointed, hurt, and in the quiet of the night wonder: "Where did I go wrong?"

Yet you who persistently learn to understand your child are already doing remarkably well. Because what truly guides a child home is never fear; it is knowing that no matter how far they wander, someone at home is waiting, willing to understand who they truly are.
