While Being 'Needed', Can You Truly Feel 'Loved'?

當你在「被需要」的同時,也能感受到「被愛」嗎?

While you are being needed,
can you also feel that you are loved?

While being needed can you also feel loved
Many people believe from childhood
that as long as they are well-behaved, sensible,
hardworking, and useful,
they will be loved.

So growing up,
we carry the exact same pattern into our relationships.
Striving to be the perfect partner,
striving to take care of the other,
striving to give continuously,
striving to make ourselves irreplaceable.

Yet one day,
we begin to feel deeply exhausted.
Because we realize
we have continuously been needed,
yet have never truly felt loved.

· · ·

Why many people cannot distinguish between love and being needed
is because they appear deceptively similar.
Need will make someone stay by your side.
Love will also make someone stay by your side.

Need might continually seek you out.
Love will also continually seek you out.

So we mistakenly believe:
as long as someone needs us,
that must be love.

However,
the essential difference between need and love lies here:
Need arises because one feels a personal void.
Love arises from the willingness to truly see who you are.

Essential distinction between need and genuine love
· · ·

A parent
may deeply need a child.
Because the child fills their loneliness,
satisfies their expectations,
and becomes their pride.

Yet,
if the child does not live as desired,
disappointment, anger, and control emerge.
In that moment,
what is being guarded
may not be the child,
but rather the parent personal need.

· · ·

A partner
may also deeply need their significant other.
Needing companionship,
needing to be cared for,
needing someone to supply security,
needing someone to prove they are worthy of love.

Consequently,
demands for accommodation begin.
Demanding change,
demanding validation,
even wishing the other to abandon their own life
to fulfill personal desires.

Is this truly love?
Or is it simply
fear of losing someone who satisfies your needs?

· · ·

This happens in professional life as well:
an employer needs employees,
an employee needs compensation,
both carry needs.
Yet we do not mistake this
for genuine love.

Because needing
is naturally part of any human connection.
The problem is never need itself.
Rather:
when one person need begins to override another person life, injury begins.

· · ·

Much control
starts with a familiar phrase.

  • "I am doing this for your own good."
  • "If you loved me, you would do this."
  • "Why can you not appreciate how much I have sacrificed?"
  • "I need you, so you cannot leave."

It sounds like love.
Yet what lies underneath
is often not the fear of losing love,
but the fear of losing someone who fulfills your needs.

· · ·

Genuine love
is not the absence of need.
Rather, even in the presence of need,
it still honors the other as an independent sovereign life.

It does not ask another to abandon themselves out of fear.
It does not ask another to mold into expectations.
Nor does it disguise control as affection out of insecurity.

· · ·

Authentic love
wishes both to become fully themselves,
rather than tools for one another.
Because need may make someone stay,
yet only love allows someone to be truly at ease.

· · ·

And when within a relationship,
you feel increasingly unable to be yourself,
perhaps the inquiry is not: "Does this person love me?"
Rather:
"Does this person love me, or love my ability to satisfy their needs?"

· · ·

Because authentic love
is never about binding someone to your side.
Even while deeply loving,
it remains willing to let the other live fully as themselves.
